“Listen to pop music if your work involves data entry or working to deadlines” – (The Telegraph)
There have been several studies looking into the benefits of listening to music while you work. In fact we know music affects us and aides us in many ways; playing Mozart to your unborn child increases their intelligence, listening to ethereal music when stressed can have a calming effect, playing fast, pounding, techno music is said to make us drive faster without even knowing it.
Music can transport us back to a place and time in our lives in a way that even photographs can’t. Mainly because it affects how it makes us feel. The importance of which can’t be over-estimated. As the great Mya Angelou once said-
“People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but they will never forget how you made them feel”
Feeling supersedes logic and logical thought because it is primal. What we now call gut instinct comes from survival instinct and can’t be ignored.
So how to bring this back to our everyday working lives. In short, a happy workforce is a productive one. Music makes us happy, ergo music is beneficial to both employees and employers alike. Now all you have to do is agree on what to put on.
